Saifa Kata Intensive - Goju Kensha/Kakurinkan

  • Peter and Stephanie Cooory Memorial Hall Australia (map)

This workshop is an explorative deep dive into our dojo’s version of the classical Goju Ryu form, SAIFA, and looks at functional self-defence against various strikes and restraints.

The literal translation is “tearing”, or to “smash” (sai) and “tear” (ha/fa). This kata makes use of many closed-fist handshapes and elbows to “smash” your opponent’s vulnerable areas. The “tearing” can refer to escaping grappling techniques used by the opponent. The underlying theme of this kata is the economical use of one arm to perform both functions of defence and attack. It contains quick whipping motions, hammer-fists, and back-fist strikes; it particularly emphasises moving off-line from an opponent’s main force, while simultaneously closing distance.

As with all Goju Kensha/Kakurinkan forms, our kata looks a little different from Goju Ryu organisations worldwide.

Bookings essential.
